$0.75 - 1976D

The third was also from my son. I wonder how many others he has been hoarding?

$0.5 - 1976P

My son collects quarters and when he heard of my predicament, offered me one.

It cost me 50 cents, not unreasonable, given the circumstances.

The first one came quickly. I found it in some change at the store and sighted it right away.

That's it, then we're done. One introduction, 40 installments and a conclusion. Why 40? Because that's how many quarters are in a roll.

The Background

One of my sisters was born in 1976 and I think that's why my mom began her mild obsession with the quarters from that year and the previous one (they were minted in both 1975 and 1976).

1976 Bicentennial Quarter Reverse

Some years back I began collecting these coins as they came through my hands and I got the bright idea that I would collect a whole roll and present them to my mother. I'd get a roll of quarters every so often and run through them. Sometimes I'd find a silver one (or two) and sometimes I'd find a bicentennial (never two). Sometimes I just found quarters.

It's kind of like gambling except that at the end of a roll, I'd still have either ten bucks or nearly ten bucks and a souvenir.

Sometime in January 2010 I finally succeeded, rolled them up, mailed them off and . . . nothing.

They never arrived.

Letters and packages on either side of that package arrived safely, so I'm left to conclude that someone stole a $10 quarter roll. Probably only worth twenty bucks, really.

I start over

I started over in March 2010. This blog will chronicle that process. I don't know how long it took me the first time and I can't guess how long the second one will take.

So get your ten bucks' worth and follow along (RSS): join me in the journey!
