Reading List

The most recent reads for this year are found at the top. This page is more for me to keep track of things than it is for anyone else. Hopefully I won't be accused of navel-gazing. Here are the lists for 2006, 2005, 2004 and 2003.

The children of Hurin

J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (editor), Alan Lee (Illustrator)
 (
city, ST: Houghton Mifflin, 2007

A swiftly turning planet

Madeleine L'Engle
 (
city, ST: publisher, ccyy
)

One can see how today's Christianity is messed up. We read stuff like this trilogy that has just enough of the right religious words but a whole lot of science fiction (or unveiled magic) and we think it must be OK. Syncretism.

A wind in the door

Madeleine L'Engle
 (
city, ST: publisher, ccyy
)

A wrinkle in time

Madeleine L'Engle
 (
city, ST: publisher, ccyy

Steve Wozniak, Gina Smith
 (
city, ST: W. W. Norton, 2006
)

Woz claims to be an ethical logician but his experience with the blue boxes shows that (at that time) he was nothing but a pranking thief. No doubt he's a genius but call it what it is/was: stealing.

The ten faces of innovation: IDEO's strategies for defeating the devil's advocate and driving creativity throughout your organization

Facsimile edition
 (
Williamsburg, Va., Colonial Williamsburg, 1959
)

I was unable to find a reference to the exact edition I read. Here's a link to Major George Washington's Journal To The River Ohio which is roughly the same thing.

I was reading a first edition paperback. Can't seem to find the right ISBN for it.

The new movie is great! The spoof didn't really do anything for me (even though I'm a HUGE Peter Sellers fan and a large David Niven fan.

Last child in the woods : saving our children from nature-deficit disorder

)

Coot club

Arthur Ransome
 (
London, Great Britain: Cox & Wyman Ltd, 1974

Another excellent Ransome book. Not, perhaps, as good as Peter Duck but still very good. My advice to anyone planning on reading this book: get the maps in your head before you start out. Understanding where you are and where they're going will help you enjoy the book more.

This is easily the best-written book I have read in ages. In fact, I can't think of a better one.

The front page quotes Hugh Walpole: "Peter Duck is so well written that you don't realize that it is written at all. The adventures just seem to occur to oneself." I heartily agree.
